What is divestment?

Divestment is when a person or organization takes money OUT of certain types of banks, companies, stocks, and funds -- and then RE-INVESTS that money in new funds. Divestment can take power away from industries that are causing harm and free up money to be invested in solutions, like sustainable energy and green jobs.

These young leaders have too much at risk to wait for their elders to lead action for climate justice. For more than two years, they worked to create pressure for CalSTRS to divest. Thanks to their work and leadership, any pro-divestment signals from the CFT members will be especially powerful. They have laid a powerful foundation. Let's join them, CFT members!

This 12-minute video was made in 2018. Since then, there has been significant growth in the divest/invest movement. The University of California system, the New York State Public Pension system, and many other colleges and faith-based organizations have announced fossil fuel divestment. The incidence and severity of climate-related disasters and risk associated with fossil fuel investments have all increased as well. This video made a strong case in 2018. In 2021/2022, the case is even stronger and more urgent.
